Welcome to a new school year, and a new editor-in-chief of The Commuter, LBCC’s award-winning news magazine and website. Skylar Wilkerson is serving as this year’s editor-in-chief.
Wilkerson was appointed to lead The Commuter staff at the end of spring term by LBCC's Student Publications Committee, a group that includes students, staff and faculty from the college. Wilkerson succeeds Micah Teague.
Last school year Wilkerson served as a contributing writer, photographer and the office manager for The Commuter, which has an office in the Forum Building on the Albany campus, F-222. Wilkerson, an LBCC science major, brings a wide range of experience to his new role as editor-in-chief, drawing from his work with fellow Commuter staffers along with staff and faculty from around the LBCC campus.
“From reading past editions, editing stories on our final proof, organizing the office, talking with students who are interested, to meeting new faces while delivering the paper on campus, my biggest joy is seeing their reaction to what’s new that month, and I had a hand in creating it,” he wrote in his application to become editor-in-chief.
“The changes I would like to see are more student involvement in the publication, be it in the magazine, or perhaps in other avenues. I feel like this would bring more interest not only on campus, but locally as well. I also want to bring more of a diversification of articles that would catch the attention of all campus departments and students that month. For example, more STEM-related articles or information.”
When he’s not in class or working for The Commuter, Wilkerson enjoys exploring scientific topics, from oceanography to geology, along with surfing on the Oregon coast.
